The Waste Hierarchy

Moving Waste Up The Hierarchy

Every waste stream we handle is assessed against the waste hierarchy. Our role is to move material as far up it as operationally and commercially possible – starting from disposal and working towards prevention.

Every waste stream we handle is assessed against the waste hierarchy. Our role is to help customers move waste as far up the hierarchy as operationally and commercially possible – prioritising prevention and reduction first, followed by reuse, recycling and recovery, with disposal as the last resort.

01
Prevent
Process change at source so the waste is never created — the highest-value outcome for our partners.
02
Reduce
Right-sizing containers, cutting collection frequency and designing waste out of daily operations.
03
Reuse

Returnable packaging, redistribution and repair — keeping material in use in its existing form.

Returnable packaging, redistribution, repair, and Food-to-feed solutions – keeping materials in use for as long as possible.

04
Recycle

Segregated collections and clean streams that keep cardboard, plastics and metals in circulation

Keeping materials and organic waste in circulation through effective segregation and appropriate recycling and treatment processes.
05
Recover

Energy from waste and anaerobic digestion, capturing value from material that cannot be recycled.

Energy recovery captures value from materials that cannot be reused or recycled.
06
Dispose

Landfill and non-recovery routes – the starting point we work to eliminate from every contract.

Underpinning Every Step
Data, compliance and visibility

Accurate weights, duty of care documentation and clear reporting on every collection – so movement up the hierarchy is evidenced, not assumed.

The Outcome
Sustainability goals and compliance
Progress that feeds directly into our partners’ environmental targets, ESG reporting and regulatory obligations.
